چکیده

The computation of a Nash equilibrium in a game is a challenging problem in artificial intelligence. This is because the computational time of the algorithms provided by the literature is, in the worst case, exponential in the size of the game. To deal with this problem, it is common the resort to concepts of approximate equilibrium. In this paper, we follow a different route, presenting, to the best of our knowledge, the first algorithm based on the combination of support enumeration methods and local search techniques to find an exact Nash equilibrium in two-player general-sum games and, in the case no equilibrium is found within a given deadline, to provide an approximate equilibrium. We design some dimensions for our algorithm and we experimentally evaluate them with games that are unsolvable with the algorithms known in the literature within a reasonable time. Our preliminary results are promising, showing that our techniques can allow one to solve hard games in a short time.

Using Correlated Strategies for Computing Stackelberg Equilibria in Extensive-Form Games

Strong Stackelberg Equilibrium (SSE) is a fundamental solution concept in game theory in which one player commits to a strategy, while the other player observes this commitment and plays a best response. We present a new algorithm for computing SSE for two-player extensive-form general-sum games with imperfect information (EFGs) where computing SSE is an NP-hard problem. Our algorithm is based ...

How to Play 3x3-Games A Strategy Method Experiment

We report an experiment that uses the strategy method (Selten 1967) to elicit subjects' general strategy for playing any 2-person 3x3-game with integer payoffs between 0 and 99. Each two subjects' strategies play 500000 games in each of the 5 tournaments. For games with pure strategy equilibria (ca. 80%), the frequency of pure strategy equilibrium play increases from 51% in the first to 74% in ...

Linear Programming Tools for Analyzing Strategic Games of Independence-Friendly Logic and Applications

In recent work, semantic games of independence-friendly logic were studied in strategic form in terms of (mixed strategy) Nash equilibria. The class of strategic games of independence-friendly logic is contained in the class of win-loss, zero-sum two-player games. In this note we draw on the theory of linear programming to develop tools to analyze the value of such games. We give two applicatio...

Computing Uniformly Optimal Strategies in Two-Player Stochastic Games

We provide a computable algorithm to calculate uniform ε-optimal strategies in two-player zero-sum stochastic games. Our approach can be used to construct algorithms that calculate uniform ε-equilibria and uniform correlated ε-equilibria in various classes of multi-player non-zero-sum stochastic games. JEL codes: C63, C73.

Choice-theoretic Solutions for Strategic Form Games

We model a player’s decision as a choice set and analyze equilibria in which each player’s choice set is a best response to the other players’ sets. We formalize the notion of best response by an abstract “choice structure,” which captures iteratively undominated strategies (for several definitions of dominance), rationalizability, and a number of formulations of choice sets. We investigate pro...
